Freeride for Beginners: From Groomed Slopes to First Powder in Siberia
Everything you need to know before leaving the groomed piste for the first time. Technique adjustments, physical conditioning, and guide selection.
When Are You Ready for Off-Piste?
Do not rush off-piste on your first or second season. To safely enjoy powder, you should comfortably carve on blue and red pistes, execute reliable emergency stops on steep terrain, and maintain good cardiovascular stamina.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Leaning Back: Beginners instinctively lean back on the tails to keep the tips from sinking. This causes extreme quadricep fatigue and complete loss of directional steering. Modern rockered skis float naturally with centered pressure.
- Riding on Narrow Carving Skis: 75mm carving skis will sink like anchors. Rent dedicated powder equipment with at least 105mm underfoot.
- Skiing Alone: The wilderness offers no ski patrol safety net. Always ride with an experienced local guide.
